February 9, 2018 -- In response to rumors surrounding an auto accident at the entrance to Cairo-Durham Middle/High School on Friday morning, here is an update to provide accurate information to help dispel further rumors.
First and foremost, all those involved in the accident are expected to be okay. The vehicles were driven by a community member, a former student, and a current teacher. Two individuals were transported to medical facilities for treatment, however the injuries are not life threatening. The teacher did not suffer any injuries and is presently in school.
We also want to express our gratitude to the first responders, including parents, students and staff, who were on hand to assist. We are so proud of our community for their willingness to help their neighbors even in frigid temperatures.
Lastly, many of us know this is not the first accident to occur in this location. Despite the district’s multiple efforts to make traffic changes at the school entrance, and although the district continues to pursue these efforts, it still comes down to driver education to encourage safe and cautious driving. Please watch and share our Traffic Safety Public Service Announcement (released last spring) to help encourage safe driving in front of our school.
