CDMS/HS Welcomes New Assistant Principal

Mrs. Miller sits in her office

Cairo-Durham Middle/High School welcomes its new interim Assistant Principal, Carolyn Miller. Mrs. Miller started her interim position in December 2017, after former Assistant Principal Joe Witazek transitioned to the principal role at Cairo-Durham Elementary. Mrs. Miller, who lives in Cairo with her family, taught English at Catskill Middle School and served as the Youth Education Coordinator at Columbia Girls Secure Center prior to working at Cairo-Durham.

Here are a few more things we learned about Mrs. Miller:

What is your role here at Cairo-Durham Central School District, and where do you work?

I am currently the Assistant Principal at Cairo-Durham Middle/High School. I work in both buildings.

How long have you worked at CDMS/HS?

I’ve only been in my position for a few weeks. My first day was on December 12, 2017.

What are your job responsibilities/priorities?

My role is to assist both Mr. Fitzgerald and Mr. Mitchell. I see students for positive and negative referrals, in addition to run the Attendance and Security Committee, monitor the parking lot and drivers, unannounced teacher observations, and build relationships with all staff and students. My priority is that all our students are safe and in an environment conducive to learning.

What is your background like – previous jobs, your education, etc.?

I am a former middle school English teacher. I spent close to 15 years teaching at Catskill Middle School. My undergraduate degree is from Russell Sage College in Secondary Education and English. I have a Master’s degree in Community Health Education, also from Sage. I received my School Building Leader certificate through the College of St. Rose while working in Catskill. My first administrative position was at Columbia Girls Secure Center, where I worked as the Youth Education Coordinator, which is similar to a principal, from 2015 to 2016.

What do you like most about your job?

I love being in a school setting and working with students and teachers.

What goal(s) do you hope to accomplish while working at CDMS/HS (short term and/or long term)?

While my position is currently interim, I hope for it to become permanent. This is my favorite position I have had yet!

Tell us a bit about your life outside of school.

I live here in Cairo with my husband and two boys. My boys attend Cairo-Durham Elementary. We enjoy attending local events and decorating for Christmas and Halloween. I am an avid reader, and enjoying DIY crafts and refinishing furniture. I love retro/vintage style and stationery items (such as pens and planners)! I am a lifelong learner and really enjoy attending workshops and conferences.

Before working here, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

I have both sold and repaired watches and eyeglasses!

What is your motto or personal mantra?

Just breathe.

What is the best advice anyone has given you?

It’s none of your business what others think of you, and try not to worry about the things you cannot control.
