Police Presence on Campus (September 19, 2018)

September 19, 2018

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Today at Cairo-Durham Middle School, right before afternoon dismissal, you or your student may have noticed an increased police presence on campus. The district was made aware of an alleged issue involving a parent, which took place on Tuesday away from school. Although every effort was made to address the issue away from campus, the parent arrived on campus this afternoon before it could be resolved. Both our School Resource Officer and local law enforcement were at the school to assist with the situation. Upon arrival, the parent was cooperative and met with the officers at that time. Although there were no threatening behaviors, the individual was taken into custody and brought to the police station for further questioning.

At no point did law enforcement or the district feel there was an immediate danger to our school community. Regardless, we thought it was best to work with law enforcement to ensure a safe resolution. We just wanted to share this information with you and reassure you that the safety of our students and staff is always our number one priority.

Sincerely,

Anthony J. Taibi
Superintendent of Schools
