On October 25, interim superintendent Dr. Pollak presented information to the Board of Education and the community about the instructional costs of running both Cairo Elementary School and Durham Elementary School or merging them into one school. Working with the administration, data was collected to compare:
- The teaching staff costs of running both schools with no change in class sizes.
- The teaching staff costs of merging the schools and keeping preferred class sizes. Preferred class size is 20 students for kindergarten and 22 students for first through fifth grades.
- The teaching staff costs of merging the schools and increasing the number of students in a class to the maximum permitted by the collective bargaining agreement with the Cairo-Durham Teachers Association. In this case, there would be 30 students in kindergarten and first grade and 32 students in second through fifth grades.
