To close out the year with a memorable celebration, the 5th grade team at Cairo-Durham Elementary School came together last week for a BBQ, generously hosted by our fantastic PTA!
Students and staff enjoyed freshly cooked hamburgers, hotdogs and corn, accompanied by delicious sides like mac and cheese, watermelon, cookies and brownies!
Even Principal Christopher Stein and SRO Deputy Espel joined in on the excitement, embracing the spirit of wiffle ball with the students. With music and laughter heard throughout, we soaked in the joy of one of our final days together as a team. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this unforgettable gathering possible!
Andrew Esslie, a member of the class of 2025 at Cairo Durham High School, has been recognized as the June 2024 Student of the Month!
Andrew is very involved in various school activities. In school, Andrew is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Board Game Club, Tennis team, and Cross Country team. He is also actively involved in Cairo Durham’s music program. He participated in this year's Musical, "Newsies", and plays the tuba in the High School's band and marching band.
Even with his many activities, he maintains an average on the high honor roll while taking challenging honors, advanced placement and college-level courses. Beyond school, Andrew is very involved in the Boy Scouts and is finishing up his Eagle Scout project. He spent time marking the Cairo Preserve trails for his community project.
Andrew likes to spend time with his family and friends outside of school. Andrew is known for making his teachers laugh and coming to class with a positive attitude. His teachers look forward to his daily “dad” jokes. If you spoke to any of Andrew’s teacher’s you would hear about how he is kind, hardworking, intrinsically motivated and always brings a good sense of humor to class.
Mrs. Emily Jones admires his “unique personality and passion for learning.” He is admired and respected by the faculty and his peers. Andrew plans to go to college to study engineering. Andrew is pictured with his PreCalculus teacher, Mrs. Emily Jones.

Ms. Wagor and Mr. Legg's class at Cairo-Durham Elementary School recently put their brains to the test with a scavenger hunt!
With the challenge of solving clues or having extended school days, the class worked together to decipher clues scattered across the building. Joining the adventure were teachers like Assistant Principal Rachel Harvey, Principal Stein, Mr. Hagan, Mrs. Rell, and many other classroom teachers who added to the thrill.
Armed with their investigative powers, teamwork and problem-solving abilities, students navigated through various classrooms, unraveling each clue. Their quest ended in the discovery of a hidden lockbox tucked away in Mr. Stein's office! Way to go, Mustangs!
Cairo-Durham High School students in the Class of 2025 were thrilled to recently receive their class rings!

The Sources of Strength Club at Cairo-Durham Middle and High School's busy month emphasizing the importance of mental health in May carried over into June!
Students had the opportunity to talk about their strengths, get some freebies (988 crisis hotline number printed on inspirational quote stickers, stress balls, wristbands, pop socket/fidget key chains and hand sanitizers) and candy, for participating.
Mustangs spun the Sources of Strength wheel and talked about that area of life, they rated their mental health on a scale of 1 - 10 and discussed why it was that number and what they could do to make it stronger if not satisfied with their status.
Peer Leaders also put inspirational quotes in restrooms on mirrors and on the back of stalls to spread positive and encouraging messages to students and staff.
Cairo-Durham Elementary School SRO Deputy Espel and K-9 Mac want to say congratulations to all Class of 2024 graduates at the Cairo-Durham Central School District, specifically those who are moving up from Pre-Kindergarten and 5th grade!
