Juniors in Ms. McDowell’s class at Cairo-Durham High School collaborated with their peers to create a “monster” to win the first ever “May Monster Mania of 2024.” Each team was required to use a set amount of provided materials (pipe cleaners, googly eyes, string, popsicle sticks, and pompoms). You may notice some monsters include other creative materials—this played a small role in final decisions. The overall goal was for students to identify a claim, two supporting reasons, a counter argument, rebuttal, and provide a conclusion. This means each team had to effectively and logically support their claim with reasoning to the judges to win. Ms. McDowell was joined by Mrs. Maassmann and Mrs. Lyndon as “Monster Mania judges.” We had a blast! Congratulations to Brendan, Zander, and Dylan for being named the winners!

The 5th grade students at Cairo-Durham Elementary School received a delightful surprise as they stepped into their classrooms on April 24, 2024! Mrs. Margiasso's Kindergarten class crafted cards for them! The cards conveyed a heartfelt message: "We are so proud of you!" These cards celebrated the fifth graders' accomplishment of completing the NYS Science Tests. This gesture was a beautiful display of kindness from the youngest members of our school community. The 5th grade team is deeply grateful for this show of support!

NEWS RELEASE from Cairo-Durham Central School District FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Cairo-Durham Elementary School Receives Stewart’s Shops “Holiday Match” Grant May 9, 2024, CAIRO, NY – The Cairo-Durham Central School District is proud to announce Cairo-Durham Elementary School was recently awarded $1,000 after being selected as a recipient of Stewart’s Shops annual “Holiday Match” grant program. The funding has been designated to purchase books for Cairo-Durham Elementary School students to expand their horizons. “With the encouragement of literacy being prevalent at all grade levels, the Cairo-Durham Central School District and Cairo-Durham Elementary School are excited and honored to be grant recipients of Stewart’s Shops ‘Holiday Match’ program,” said Cairo-Durham Central School District Superintendent Michael Wetherbee. Securing the “Holiday Match” grant, as well as the Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant in September 2023 that brought $4,000 worth of SyllaSense decodable books for elementary students, was part of an effort spearheaded by the leadership of Cairo-Durham Elementary School teacher Sarah Hasbrook to enhance learning opportunities for all students. “I am incredibly grateful for Stewart’s Shops and Dollar General in selecting Cairo-Durham Elementary School as a recipient of their grant programs this school year as the District continues its focus on promoting literacy and advancing the skillsets of our diverse student body,” said Hasbrook. It's never too late to recognize change makers in the Cairo-Durham Central School District! Congratulations to Zachary Russell, a member of the class of 2024 at Cairo Durham High School, for being recognized as the March 2024 Student of the Month. Zach is very involved in various school activities. He is a five-sport athlete (soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, volleyball, and baseball). He participates in the music program through playing the saxophone and singing in the chorus. Even with his many activities, he maintains an average on the High Honor Roll while taking college-level courses. Beyond school, Zach likes to spend time with his family and friends. If you spoke to any of Zach’s teacher’s you would hear the same thing, he is kind, hardworking, intrinsically motivated and always brings a good sense of humor to class. Mrs. Jones admires his “dedication to his academics, but also the ability to balance it all!” He is admired and respected by the faculty and his peers. As a member of the National Honor Society, he is a role model to his peers through his strong commitment to academics, his high moral standards and leadership skills in the classroom and on the sports field. According to Zach, “All of my teachers are very supportive and helpful.” Zach plans to attend a college with the aspiration of becoming an engineer.
