Ms. Wagor's 5th grade students were asked the question: How fast does the Earth spin?
By acting as the Earth spinning around the sun, students quickly realized the sun isn’t moving at all. In the activity, students used their bodies as a kinesthetic model of the Earth to understand how the speed of the Earth’s spin affects the length of a day.
Students learned that when their face spun towards the sun, their back spun away from the Sun. This proved that when sunrise is happening for one side of the world, sunset is happening for the other side of the world.
To answer the initial question, students learned that the circumference of the Earth is about 24,000 miles. Therefore, if it takes the Earth 24 hours to do one spin all the way around itself, that's 24,000 miles divided by 24 hours in one spin. If you do the math, that equals 1,000 miles an hour! The class was shocked!
Great job, all!
The Varsity Boys Basketball team lost a tough game tonight away at Chatham and the Boys JV Basketball team lost by 3 points in the first game of the night. The Girls Varsity Basketball team lost a close game at home tonight in a back and forth battle with Chatham.
Ms. Goodwin's Global 9 students worked at stations and read about the Rise and Fall of Ancient Civilizations. Students were tasked with answering the following questions: What were the commonalities in their rise, and what do they all have in common for their fall?
Great job, all!

Cairo-Durham High School’s December Student of the Month is senior Sadie Hall!
Currently, Sadie is enrolled in very rigorous classes, such as College American Government, College Physics, AP Calculus, and AP English Language, and is maintaining a 90% or higher in all of those classes. Her teacher, Mrs. Jones, describes her as, “a great role model and always doing what needs to get done with a smile and no complaints. She is involved in multiple school activities and events. While doing all of those non-academic activities, she is also able to bring a 100% to class and maintain a high average. She does whatever is asked and does it well. She is dependable and reliable. She always has a smile and a great attitude.” For these reasons, teachers and staff members are proud to name her Student of the Month.
Outside of class, Sadie participates in the band, chorus, musical productions, National Honor Society, is on the basketball team and is the senior class Vice President. When not in school, Sadie enjoys reading, listening to music and spending time with family and friends. She states that her friends would describe her as, “the funniest person they know.” After high school, Sadie plans on attending college to study Mathematics, perhaps one day becoming a math teacher. Here she is pictured with one of her teachers, Mrs. Clermont. Great job Sadie, keep up the hard work being a wonderful role model for our CD Students!
