Mrs. Farnsworth’s 1st graders “adopted” a cow named Darby at Dutch Hollow Farm and they are watching her grow all year! They are enjoying watching Darby grow and change as time passes.
The class discussed how the needs of animals are met so they can survive and grow, as well as the ways that parents and offspring are similar and different. These concepts are part of the Next Generation Science Standards for first grade.
The class also has a stuffed cow named Darby that goes home with a student every night and they write a journal entry to tell the class what they did with Darby at home. The journal entries help students practice their informative writing skills.
Darby's "adoption" was free and facilitated through the Discovery Dairy program.
