Congratulations to Alaina M. for being named the "Star of the Week" in the Thompson/Lopez class at Cairo-Durham Elementary School!
Cairo Durham alumni and current owner of "The Juice Branch" in Cairo, Anthony D’Errico, recently stopped by Cairo-Durham Elementary School to showing Mrs. Sniffen's class how to make healthy juices from his store for “J Day”! The students were able to help peel ingredients, make the juice and even name their juice they created!
On June 10, 2024, Mrs. Lopez's and Mrs. Whitbeck’s class at Cairo-Durham Elementary School celebrated "Donut Day"! Students learned strategies for marketing and pitching new food ideas. They then worked with partners to develop a new donut flavor for Dunkin' Donuts. Each group was tasked with creating a unique donut, describing it in detail, naming it, drawing it, and pitching why their donut was so special and would be a top seller.
After presenting their creations to the class, students walked to Dunkin' Donuts in Cairo and pitched their ideas to the management team. The management team then provided donuts for the students to enjoy.
All of the students' unique creations/posters are on display at Dunkin' Donuts on Main Street in Cairo! Some extraordinary ideas, go see for yourself!
A very special thank you to the Dunkin' Donuts Management Team, Liz D., John H., and Danny P. for their collaboration on this educational and fun project, and for providing the students with so many delicious donuts!
Thank you to Cairo-Durham Elementary School Principal Christopher Stein for approving this trip and to all of our amazing chaperones!

The Cairo-Durham Elementary School's annual field day on June 7, 2024 was a hit! Thank you to Principal Christopher Stein for taking pictures of the activities!
On June 3, 2024, the students in Mrs. Whitbeck’s and Mrs. Lopez’s class at Cairo-Durham Elementary School visited The Pines in Catskill! These amazing students have spent weeks preparing for their visit. The class created approximately 70 handmade cards for the residents, hand-delivered each card and read each card aloud as they visited with their new friends from The Pines!
The students also participated in a Talent/Show-and-Tell presentation that they rehearsed
for several days. Students showed photographs of pets, performed gymnastics, read books, presented their frog projects, showed off ball-handling skills, described hockey equipment, taught words in other languages and more! The students and teachers also presented “Mickie” with a special poster to celebrate her 100th birthday!
A special thank you to Alison Meehan, Helena Spooner, and Ashley Licis for chaperoning the event and to Laurie Harp from The Pines for collaborating with Mrs. Lopez and Mrs. Whitbeck in order to coordinate the trip. Everyone had an incredible time and the students at Cairo-Durham Elementary School look forward to visiting again next year!

Pete Lopez, former Region 2 EPA Administrator and current Executive Director of Policy, Advocacy and Science for Scenic Hudson recently visited Mrs. Thompson's and Mrs. Lopez's class at Cairo-Durham Elementary School!
The students viewed photographs and discussed a variety of key environmental issues. The discussions focused on how we can all work together to create and maintain clean, healthy neighborhoods and farms, along with the importance of protecting forests.
Students also learned about alternative energy and pollution. All of the students participated enthusiastically and learned how to be stewards of the environment! Thank you, Mr. Lopez!
