Cairo-Durham is proud to announce that Marc Cammarata is the February 2023 Student of the Month! Marc is an 11th grader taking AP and College Level classes, while maintaining a 94 GPA. Marc is very active in the music program at Cairo-Durham, participating in the band, chorus, and bell choir. Additionally, he was in this year’s production of West Side Story, playing one of the lead roles. Marc believes his “hard work and putting his best foot forward” has led to his success. He is a class officer and a member of the National Honor Society. Outside of the classroom, Marc is also part of the golf team, student council, marching band, and NYSSMA competitions.
When not in school, Marc likes reading, spending time with his family and friends, and watching movies. Marc describes himself as, “incredibly hardworking and dedicated to everything I work on. I’m always willing to help others with anything they need.” Additionally, his teachers describe him as a, “great role model of a student. He engages in class and puts forth a great effort. In addition to being a leader in the classroom, Marc is very involved in extracurricular activities and volunteering his time to help others. He is very much deserving of this recognition.” After high school Marc is undecided about where he would like to go to college, but definitely plans on attending. Here, Marc is pictured with his College English teacher and fellow West Side Story actor, Mr. Thomas Corbett.

Bloom and Moon Excel at SkillsUSA Competition
Cairo, NY – The Cairo-Durham Central School District would like to congratulate two Cairo-Durham High School students, Connor Bloom and Shawn Moon on placing first and third, respectively, in Precision Heavy Equipment Operation at the SkillsUSA Area III Regional competition on March 16th.
Bloom and Moon, both seniors who study Precision Heavy Equipment Operation at the Marilyn A. Noonan School at Durham, said the skills they have learned over the last decade working on farms and for their families, as well as new techniques and lessons in their CTE program, were tested heavily at the competition.
After two weeks of preparation at their BOCES school, Bloom and Moon were ready to shine.
“We had to get in an excavator and knock tennis balls off of cones, we had to back up a semi (truck) and name a bunch of tools and parts,” said Moon.
For Bloom, as one of seven total first-place finishers representing Questar III BOCES, the challenges will escalate in Syracuse for the state competition on April 26-28. A task he is ready to tackle.
“We worked hard for it. I think the tests are going to be a lot harder,” Bloom said. “I’m up for the challenge though.”
Bloom said the support from the district and his classmates at the Marilyn A. Noonan School at Durham has been overwhelming, with many congratulations and cheers being thrown his and Moon’s way.
“We are extremely proud of Connor and Shawn’s accomplishments at the recent SkillsUSA competition,” said Superintendent Michael Wetherbee. “The programs offered at the Marilyn A. Noonan School at Durham allow our students to specialize in fields that they have a passion and desire to improve and serve in post-graduation, with real-life certifications and trials to participate in.”
After graduating in June, both Bloom and Moon have aspirations of working in the heavy equipment industry to perfect their craft. Bloom spoke on two lessons he’s learned in the process of getting ready for the state competition.
“Put your mind to it, and listen to what people say you need to improve on,” said Bloom.

The Cairo-Durham Central School District would like to formally welcome and introduce our school community to Mr. David Proper, who on March 9th, 2023, was approved by the Board of Education to serve as the Interim Principal at Cairo-Durham High School.
Mr. Proper comes to CDHS after 23 years at Coxsackie-Athens Central School District, serving as a Vice Principal and Athletic Director for 10 years and Middle School Principal for his last 13 years. Possessing a background in being a High School Principal, Mr. Proper filled that role at Parsons Child and Family Center in Albany for a number of years prior to his time at Coxsackie-Athens.
After growing up in Columbia County, Mr. Proper attended SUNY Brockport and then SUNY Albany for his undergraduate and Master’s programs. Having been raised and working in the area surrounding Cairo-Durham, Mr. Proper says he is familiar with the district and has great respect for its strong history and makeup.
Mr. Proper has made it clear to district administration and faculty that he is excited to establish connections and interact with the people that make up our district in order to provide the best possible learning opportunities and experience for the student body.
